The four West of England Unitary Authorities have prepared, or are in the process of preparing, their Green Space Strategies, in accordance with Planning Policy Guidance (PPG) 17. It is envisaged that the provision of this GI website for the West of England area will provide a resource which allows these strategies to be ‘joined up’, resulting in connectivity of GI assets across administrative boundaries whilst maintaining local character.
To achieve GI connectivity, landowners need to recognise the importance of their land as a GI asset and to manage sites to maximise their potential both individually and as part of the GI network.
Links also need to be strengthened between the environmental sector and the construction and design, engineering and health and education sectors. This GI website will act as a focus point to promote working together and a common point of reference. Sectors working to achieve similar environmental outcomes, such as water resources and coastal defences will also benefit from the use of this GI website.
